Terms of use
Last updated October 11, 2026
These terms apply to dancebook.com, catalog.dancebook.com and the Dancebook API. By using them, or by creating an account, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
Who runs Dancebook
Dancebook is operated by William Harvey, 2355 Westwood Blvd. #1211, Los Angeles, CA 90064, USA ("Dancebook", "we", "us"). You can reach us at admin@dancebook.com.
Age
Dancebook is for adults. You must have reached the age of majority where you live to use Dancebook or to create an account; by using it, you confirm that you have. In the United States that's 18, except 19 in Alabama and Nebraska and 21 in Mississippi. Dancebook is not meant for children and does not collect data about anyone under the age of majority. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under it, we close the account and delete its personal data.
Accounts
An account is for one person. Give a real email address you can receive mail at, keep your password to yourself, and tell us at admin@dancebook.com if you think someone else has used your account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or harms the site or its data.
You can sign in with a Google account instead of a password. If you do, keep that Google account secure: anyone who can sign in to it can sign in to your Dancebook account. Google's terms of service (opens in a new tab) apply to your use of your Google account, and the Privacy policy explains what Dancebook receives from Google. The age requirement above applies however you sign in.
Your contributions
Contributions are what you add to Dancebook: dancekey tags, track details, corrections and audio fingerprints. Fingerprints are short codes computed from a recording; Dancebook never receives the audio itself.
- Contribute only what you believe is accurate, and only what you have the right to release into the public domain; for example, don't copy text from a source that doesn't allow it.
- You release your contributions under Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal (opens in a new tab): you dedicate them to the public domain, so Dancebook and anyone else may copy, change, publish and share them, including through the API, for any purpose and without asking permission or giving credit. This is how all metadata on Dancebook is published (see Legal).
- Contributions may be reviewed, changed or removed by Dancebook editors. Tags from Contributors wait for an Editor's approval unless they agree with an approved tag.
- Contributions stay after you delete your account. They are then no longer linked to any personal data (see the Privacy page).
Acceptable use
Please don't:
- add false or misleading information on purpose, or spam;
- try to get into accounts, data or parts of the site that aren't yours;
- overload the site or the API, get around its limits, or copy its data in bulk other than through the API;
- use the site in a way that breaks the law or other people's rights.
The API
API keys are issued by Dancebook to people and applications. Keep your key private; it may be limited, changed or withdrawn at any time, for example if it's misused or shared. Requests are rate limited.
Other sources
Dancebook uses and links to information from other services, such as MusicBrainz and AcoustID, and refers to dances by their israelidance Dancekey and Versionkey numbers. That information belongs to its owners and is provided under their own terms. Names of songs, artists and dances belong to their respective owners. Links to other websites are provided for convenience; we don't control them and aren't responsible for them.
Dancebook's own content
The CC0 dedication covers Dancebook's metadata (see Legal). It does not cover the site itself: the software, page design and text of the site, and the Dancebook name and logo, belong to William Harvey and may not be copied or used without permission, except as the law allows. Software from others is used under its own license (see Legal).
Copyright complaints
If you believe something on Dancebook infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA):
William Harvey, DMCA agent
2355 Westwood Blvd. #1211, Los Angeles, CA 90064, USA
admin@dancebook.com
The notice must include:
- your physical or electronic signature;
- the copyrighted work you believe is infringed;
- the material you believe infringes it, and where it is on Dancebook (for example, its address);
- your name, postal address, telephone number and email address;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn't authorized by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
- a statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are the copyright owner or are authorized to act for them.
We will remove or disable access to the material and tell the person who provided it, if we know who that is. If you believe material of yours was removed by mistake, you can send a counter-notice to the same address with your signature, the material and where it was, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification, your name, address and telephone number, and your consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your address (or, outside the United States, any judicial district where Dancebook may be found) and to accept service from the person who sent the notice. We may restore the material 10 to 14 business days after receiving a valid counter-notice unless the complainant tells us they have filed a lawsuit. We close the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe copyright. A false notice or counter-notice can make you liable for damages.
No warranty
Dancebook is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. The information on it is collected from many people and sources and may be incomplete or wrong, and the site may be unavailable or change at any time.
Limitation of liability
As far as the law allows, Dancebook and William Harvey are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from using or being unable to use the site, the API or the information on them, even if told such damages were possible. As far as the law allows, our total liability for any claim relating to Dancebook is limited to US $100. Dancebook is free to use; these limits are part of what makes that possible. Some places don't allow some of these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
Indemnity
If you break these terms or the law while using Dancebook, or your contributions infringe someone else's rights, you agree to cover the claims, losses and reasonable legal costs this causes us, as far as the law allows. This doesn't apply to consumers where local law doesn't allow it.
Ending your use
You can stop using Dancebook at any time and delete your account from Your account → Personal data. We may suspend or end your access, or close your account, if you break these terms or to protect the site, its users or its data, and we may change or stop Dancebook, or any part of it, at any time. The sections on your contributions, Dancebook's own content, no warranty, limitation of liability, indemnity and governing law continue to apply after your use ends.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and the federal laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute relating to Dancebook or these terms will be heard only in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California, and you and we agree to their jurisdiction. Please contact us first; most concerns can be settled informally. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the EEA or the UK, you can also bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live, and its mandatory consumer laws still apply.
General
- These terms, with the Privacy policy and the Cookies page, are the whole agreement between you and us about Dancebook.
- If any part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce a part of these terms at some point, we can still enforce it later.
- You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours, for example if Dancebook is taken over by someone else, as long as your rights aren't reduced.
- We aren't responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
If you are in the European Union, the EEA or the UK
- Nothing in these terms takes away the rights you have under the consumer protection and data protection laws of the country where you live; where these terms conflict with those laws, the laws apply.
- How your personal data is used, and your rights over it (to see, correct, delete or download it, and to object), are explained in the Privacy policy.
- Optional cookies are only used with your consent, which you can give or withdraw at any time on the Cookies page. The site works the same either way.
- You need to have reached the age of majority where you live, 18 in the EU, the EEA and the UK, to use Dancebook or create an account (see Age, above).
Do Not Track
Some browsers can send a Do Not Track (DNT) signal. Dancebook does not respond to it: there was never an agreed standard for what a website should do with it, work on that standard stopped in 2019, and most browsers have since dropped it. Dancebook does not track you across other websites or let anyone else do so, so there is nothing for DNT to turn off. This notice is here because some places, such as California and Colorado, ask websites to say how they handle these signals; the Privacy policy has the details.
Changes
These terms may change. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change significantly affects your rights, we will email account holders at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless it's required sooner by law or to stop misuse. If you keep using Dancebook after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms; if you don't accept them, you can delete your account.
